The U.S.S. United States was one of the first frigates authorized by the United States Congress in 1794. After being repaired in 1842, it left the Hampton Roads, Virginia bound for duty in Pacific via Cape Horn as the flagship of the Pacific Squadron. Herman Melville enlisted as a seaman in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1843. The ship returned to Boston, Massachusetts in 1844 and was placed out of commission for repairs. The frigate later saw service as part of the Mediterranean Squadron and was ultimately dismantled by the Navy in 1865. |
